3 Tips for Overcoming the Fear of Starting a New Blog or Business

I’ll admit it. When I started my real estate investing adventures in Miami, Florida as a 21 year old college kid, I was scared.

I was nearing graduation and had no job offer lined up because I wanted to pursue my own entrepreneurial journey as a real estate investor.

I thought that if I could go out and raise enough capital from investors and banks, I could buy enough real estate investments to earn me a living that replaces a job salary.

I was scared that if I sacrificed going the traditional job route and failed as an investor, I would have missed out on income, security, and being able to provide for my family.

It’s totally okay to be scared though. Fear is a force that helps you survive.

It can push you to do things if you learn how to conquer it.

It can also hold you back from doing things if you let it and negatively impact your success.

To conquer fear, you have to first understand it. Why is it there? What is causing it?

Once you do that, you’ll be able to overcome it using the following 3 methods…

1. Method #1: What’s the Worst That Can Happen?

If you get caught up in fear, your reality becomes a blur. You have to take a step back and see the bigger picture and ask yourself, “what’s the worst that can happen?” You’ll likely discover that the worst thing that could happen really isn’t that bad.

So, if you’re thinking of starting your online business ask yourself “what’s the worst that can happen?”

Online businesses are very inexpensive to start up so money isn’t going to be a huge issue if you fail. You’ll likely lose out on a few hundred bucks you invested in the business which can be made back from your full time or part time job in a matter of days.

The worst thing that is likely to happen with starting an online business is you waste a lot of time and effort building your online business only to find out your idea was a flop and produced no income.

So what?

Look at the positive side. You had fun building it, you learned a lot along the way, and maybe you were close to making a lot of money but weren’t quite experienced enough to see your shortfall and fix it in time.

But hey.. here is a free course I’ve created to help save others the troubles I faced as a new blogger. Let me save you time getting your blog started the right way, the successful way.

When I first started my website GolfPracticeGuides.com, I had this vision of creating an awesome golf website for people to come to and learn how to practice golf better. I spent hours writing lots of articles and hours growing my Instagram account to 2,500 followers only to see very little traffic trickle in and no sales.

I gave up on my website for a few months and stopped publishing articles.

I stopped posting to Instagram.

This was the worst that could happen. I put in all the effort and saw my business flop. Or did it?

Then one day I received an alert that someone had bought my product I was selling on my website. My first sale! I was so excited and motivated by this one sale that I began writing more articles for my website and growing my Instagram account again.

Before you knew it, I saw my website traffic climbing from 100 visitors per month to 3,000+ visitors per month. I saw my Instagram account grow from 2,500 followers to 10,000 followers to 22,000 followers over the course of 4 to 5 months.

Best of all, I saw my income grow from $0 per month to $1,000+ per month.

I didn’t give my business enough time to mature. I wanted instant results and instant gratification for all the hard work I was putting in. When I didn’t see the results, I was ready to throw in the towel and didn’t realize I was on the verge of success.

The key is to be consistent and be patient. Eventually my website started ranking in Google and social media started growing on its own, producing me more and more monthly income as more traffic came across my products I was selling.

Lesson here: don’t give up.

2. Know What to Expect When You Start.

One of the best ways to overcome fear is to familiarize yourself with what you’re unfamiliar with. This will eliminate the fear of the unknown.

The best way to get familiar with the unfamiliar is to talk to people who have experience. Find a mentor to learn from.

They’ll guide you through the tough times and give you lessons of wisdom that they learned since they’ve already done what you’re trying to do and have been where you’re trying to go.

Reading books is great, but the best way to truly learn is to find someone to talk to and learn from them live in person.

When starting your online business, find people to email and talk to who have built successful online businesses. It’s okay to ask them for help. They’re more than likely to say yes because they love sharing their story and success with others and seeing others grow.

One of the best gifts of life is helping other people. They say the key to living is giving. It brings true happiness so find someone who is excited to mentor your online business and share their success stories and failures with you. Offer to meet up if they are local and buy them coffee and if they aren’t local, set up a Skype or Facetime meeting.

Counter fear with knowledge.

3. Take Action. Just Do It.

Nike came out with the best headline for conquering fear: JUST DO IT!

It’s easier said than done, but the best way to beat your fear is to do the thing you are scared of.

I remember being scared to get up in front of a large class in college and give a 5 minute speech. Finally, when it was my turn I had no choice but to get up and do it. As soon as I started speaking I felt prepared and confident and did very well.

Afterwards I thought to myself “that wasn’t so bad” and I actually enjoyed being up in front of everyone as an authoritative figure sharing my knowledge on the subject I gave a speech on which happened to be real estate, something I’m very passionate about.

The key is to be prepared though! You should take the time prior to taking action to do the proper research and learn the business you are getting into.

In real estate, they say you should spend no more than 6 months studying real estate before you finally take action. It’s very common for investors to fall into analysis paralysis where all they do is study, learn, study, learn and they never take action. They feel they need to know everything to get started and this isn’t true.

With online business, learn what’s important to know about your niche and then take action!
